Some 17 Cadets from 51 (Orton) Squadron had an early start on Sunday morning as they attended Bedford International Athletics Stadium along with 28 other squadrons to compete for top position at track and field events in the annual Wing Athletics competition.
Each cadet who attended did themselves proud with Flt Lt Andy Mason Saying "Everyone did so well today and everyone clearly gave their all regardless if they received a medal or not." Medals were not in short supply for 51 this weekend though.
Sgt Conor Wells received Silver for his hard work in Shot Put for the Senior Boys class, whilst Cadet Katie Heywood, also received Gold for her first Athletics event since joining ATC, again in Shot Put for the Junior Girls Category.
Two other new entrants into the ATC also stood out, Cadet Thomas Purchase for his achievements in 100m and Long Jump for the Junior Boys Class, Cadet Purchase received a bronze for both events. Whilst Cadet Ronnie Hobbs sprinted home to a silver medal in the 200m Junior Boys Class final.
Those taking part in the Senior Girls were the first to receive their medals in the relay race with a second position, and a silver presentation.
Sports are a popular activity for Air Cadets not just by gaining recognition for themselves but also for the squadron with hope of going forward to represent the Wing at Region and then even nationally. Athletics is supported well by all cadets as it gives such variety of skills to display and work at.
